The City of Brownsville and the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation announce that the 2024 Summer Games of Texas-Brownsville athletics competitions will go on as scheduled and are making preparations for inclement weather.
Starting on Thursday, July 25, 2024, the games will take place across several venues in Brownsville, the largest city in the Rio Grande Valley. Running until Sunday, July 28, 2024, the event promises to go on rain or shine, showcasing a vibrant array of athletic talent and community spirit.
Contingency plans are established in case of bad weather. More information and sport update schedules can be found on the Texas Athletic Amateur Federation website at TAAF.com and GamesofTexas.com.
Brownsville was selected to host this event due to its strong commitment to amateur athletics and its efforts to enhance community life through parks, recreation, and leisure services.
The City of Brownsville is excited to bring the Games of Texas to Brownsville for the second consecutive year, said Brownsville Mayor John Cowen Jr. “It’s a tremendous honor for Brownsville to be the site for these illustrious games. The games bring together the most talented athletes from across our great state and we are proud to be the crossroads where dreams are realized, where hard work pays off, and where sportsmanship shines.”
Attendees of the Games of Texas are encouraged to explore the various attractions that the City of Brownsville offers. “We have beautiful museums, including a children’s museum and a historical museum. There’s also a mall and the largest Main Event in the nation,” said City Manager Helen Ramirez, AICP. “The Games of Texas brings about $4 million in economic impact.”
This would be the 38th Games of Texas and the Games are a big economic generator to the area, said Mark Lord executive director of the Texas Athletic Amateur Federation. “South Texas Region II is our biggest track registration in the history of TAFF. I want to encourage everybody to come out, the athletes are going to be here they need some cheering, so come and support them.”
This year’s Games of Texas are expected to be a landmark event, drawing over 10,000 athletes, family members, and friends. Competitions will take place at various City venues, including those managed by the Brownsville Independent School District. Successful athletes will have the chance to advance to state-level competitions, creating lasting memories and showcasing their skills in a celebration of sports and community spirit.
