Preparations are underway across the City as the Summer Games of Texas – Brownsville approach. City crews are preparing venues where more than a dozen sports will take place, including the Brownsville Sports Park, the North Brownsville Park and Tennis Center, the Brownsville Events Center, the Margaret M. Clark Aquatic Center, and Veterans Memorial High School.
This year, the City’s Parks and Recreation Department, which manages the Games of Texas events, anticipates the number of attendees to exceed last year’s nearly 10,000 guests.
“We are looking forward to hosting athletes and their families. We expect a large crowd and are excited to showcase what Brownsville has to offer,” said Araceli Sandoval, a representative from the Parks and Recreation Department.
The Games are attracting athletes, their families, and friends from across Texas. According to City officials, participants registered to compete hail from Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, Corpus Christi, Laredo, and the Rio Grande Valley.
“It’s important for athletes from across Texas to come and participate in the Games of Texas. They will find a welcoming community, excellent facilities, and a great competitive spirit here in Brownsville,” said Mark Lord, an event organizer.
The Summer Games of Texas Brownsville is also set to create an economic boom for local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, retail shops, and other attractions.
“This event will have a significant impact on our local economy. Businesses such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, various restaurants, and many more will see an influx of visitors,” said Mali Montesam, a local business leader.
This year’s athletic competitions include 16 different sports such as Boxing, Disc Golf, Flag Football, Pickleball, Skateboarding, Swimming, Tennis, and more. Games officials note there is still a chance for athletes to sign up, with details available on the Games of Texas Brownsville website at www.GamesofTexas.com.
The City of Brownsville also offers opportunities for local civic groups, high school, and university students to volunteer at any of the athletic competition venues. Those interested in volunteering may call (956) 238-0185.
